Blackness in Latin America Series
LAS Tertulia with BSP - Race, Land, and Cuba 1868-1959
A Latin American Studies & BSP Tertulia featuring Professor Sara Kozameh (UCSD) and Adriana Chira (Emory)
This conversation explores the participation of Black peasants in radical politics in Cuba. It traces their efforts to claim and control land through the court system, direct occupation, strikes, and insurgency from the age of emancipation to the 1959 Cuban Revolution. Only through close attention to land claims can we shed light on popular racial politics prior to the Revolution and on how Black peasants and rural workers shaped the Revolution's ideological content and policies.
